Jan Frodeno Sets New Ironman Distance World Record (7:35:39) at 2016 Challenge Roth

German Jan Frodeno, perhaps already the worlds greatest triathlete, set a world record at the Ironman distance triathlon this last weekend at the 2016 Challenge Roth, posting an insane 7:35:39 and taking almost six minutes of the previous world record set by Andreas Raelert on this same course five years ago.

(Jan Frodeno sets new Ironman distance world record)
Frodeno's swim split of 45:22 had him out of the water with a one minute lead, then he broke away with a 4:09:11 bike split (even with a crash in a ditch!) and a 2:40:35 run, his fastest ever. Frodeno already has an incredible list of professional accolades, including an Olympic gold medal (2008) and his current reign as both the 70.3 and Ironman World Champion. Now a world record to boot! Pretty amazing. Congrats, Jan!!!

Dennis Kimetto Sets New Marathon WR of 2:02:57 at 2014 Berlin Marathon

Just four years after dedicating his life to running, 30-year-old Kenyan Dennis Kimetto became the first to break 2:03 in the marathon with a world record 2:02:57 at the 2014 Berlin Marathon today. An outstanding performance from a man who was a sustenance farmer in Kapngetuny, Kenya, just a few years ago!

(Dennis Kimetto breaks the tape, and new territory for the marathon WR)
Kimetto had help from his regular nemesis Emmanuel Mutai, a man familiar with sub-2:04 finishes, who pushed him throughout the race. The two negative split the famously fast course to both come under the previous world mark, with Mutai also setting a new 30k world record of 1:27:37 en route to his 2:03:13 second place finish.

Kimetto famously began training seriously after a chance encounter with New York City and Boston Marathon course record holder Geoffrey Mutai in 2010, who invited him to join his training group. It was two years later (2012 Berlin Marathon), when Geoffrey Mutai took a 1-second victory over Kimetto – that the world first learned of his true ability. When Kimetto later was on a 2:03 pace at the 2013 Chicago Marathon (where he finished in 2:03:52, just 7 seconds behind Emmanuel Mutai), even the current marathon world record holder, Wilson Kipsang (2:03:23), took notice and claimed he was the one to watch. Turns out, he was right!

26.2 seconds off the marathon world record...one second at a time, they chip away to a sub-2!

Mo Farah Breaks 100m World Record...Well, In the Potato Sack 100m Anyway

Olympic Double Gold-Medalist Mo Farah, more known for his 5k/10k prowess, finally got to add a world record to his resume....for the 100m potato sack race. Check the video here.

His blazing speed of 39.91 seconds was good enough to get into the Guinness Book of World Records. Will Usain Bolt retaliate?!?

I wonder how hard it would be to find a world record to go after. If I was 90 years old, I could just grab three friends and do a relay and instantly set an age group WR like these guys.

Unrelated - a quick note to Big Sur Marathon fans - if you want to run in 2015, you better get over there and register. The process is different this year (some first come, first serve, some lottery) but it's showing as much craziness as last years 59-minute sell out.

And if Comrades is on your agenda for next year, don't forget to wear your age group tag or you may be disqualified (and have to sue Comrades like Zola Budd).

Okay, enough random links. ;-)

Nick Pedatella, Nicki Kimball Victorious at Bear 100; Geoff Roes and Regan Petrie Take UROC

You gotta love that even the low-key events like the Bear 100 have live updates these days. Not that I need an excuse to stay up all night. ;-) Looks like Nick Pedatella took home the win in 20:05, with Nikki Kimball winning the Women's division in 22:51 for 6th overall. Shout out to Mick Jurynec for his 5th place finish, and Gary Gellin's 7th place 100-mile debut (23:14).

At the first Ultra Race Of Champions (UROC), Geoff Roes used his signature closing speed to win in 8:58, over 20 minutes ahead of 2nd place Michael Wardian who lost his lead with a wrong turn, while local Regan Petrie took the Women's division in 9:47 (10th overall), 14 minutes ahead of 2nd place Devon Crosby-Helms. (full results)

Other fun reads for the weekend:

Patrick Macau breaks the marathon world record at the Berlin Marathon in 2:03:38

Max King pulls a weekend double-header, winning the Flagline 50k (USATF 50k Trail National Championship) in Bend, OR, on Saturday, and the XTerra Trail National Championship in Ogden, UT, on Sunday. That's just a week after winning the World Mountain Running Championship. That guy is on a tear!

Galen Rupp is interviewed about setting a new 10k American Record.

Lizzy Hawker breaks the 24-hour world record just a month after winning UTMB.

UROC has live coverage Saturday, complete with video hosted by AJW.

Rod Bien and newly-crowned USATF 50k Trail Masters Champion Jeff Browning contemplate if a 50k is truly an ultra. Maybe Jeff will sing a different tune now that he's the 50k Champ!

Happy running this weekend!

Amazingly, she is posting some damn good finish times with each of them too! The Spec has a great article about her last race.

My first thought was "can you even schedule 25 100-milers in a single year"? Turns out you can...here was her original schedule, courtesy of Vince. Look at all those hot ones in July, or the 5 back-to-back in October. She is super woman!!!

Didja See? Usain Bolt lowers 100m AND 200m World Records (video)

(Usain Bolt goes 9.58 seconds in the 100m, photo courtesy of Kerim Otken/EPA)

Usain Bolt lowered his Men's 100m world record by an astounding .11 seconds in the World Athletics Championships in Berlin on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009, then dominated the 200m four days later with a 19.19 second world record. Seventeen years had passed between Carl Lewis running the 100m in 9.86 seconds in 1991 and Usain Bolt going .14sec faster in May 2008, but he's already chopping it down by huge amounts. The scientists who predicted man couldn't run that fast for another 20 years are going back to the books.

How fast can he go? Usain thinks 9.4's is possible. Some say he might need some assistance from technology (luckily he and all the sprinters tested negative for doping). But one thing for sure, he's in a league of his own.

Check out the video. It sure is cool to be alive at a time when others can show us the limitless potential of the human spirit.

[update] - Usain Bolt extended his domination by running 19.19 for 200m, .11 seconds faster than his previous world record. Video above. Wow!
