Doing the map thing - where in the world have you run?

Have you ever plotted out all the places you have raced or run? Thanks to Google and Yahoo Maps, it's easier to do than ever (and free too - bonus!). As I was recovering from a long run last weekend, I used a tool by MapBuilder.net to plot out many of the races I have done in the last few years. It's a fun way to kill a few hours if you're interested.

You can find the map here. Just click on one of the red pinpoints to learn about the race, or use the list of locations on the right. Hey, look - maybe Auburn, CA IS the endurance capital of the world. ;-)

MapBuilder.net is a free service that simplifies the code-writing for building both Google and Yahoo Maps. It's a fast way to play around with the technology, and once you look at the source code, you can get an idea of how to extend the map (and skip the Mapbuilder ads if they drive you crazy). For you bloggers out there, give it a shot!

Cheers,

SD

  1. Scott -

I liked clicking on Death Valley Marathon and then switching to Satellite view. Neat!

It's too bad you can't highlight the actual trail you ran. That would be cool.

You know, maybe RD's should provide a link like these so you know EXACTLY where the race starts.

  2. Another similarly addictive map site is usatf.com/routes. I like it because you can post running routes or check out routes that others have posted. It helps break up the monotony of a long run if someone's already come up with a route for you.

    Did you see this site...

    http://www.usatf.org/routes/

It also has a nice UI for creating and searching runs submitted by users.

See you up in Lake Tahoe next week.

  4. another equally, if not more addictive mapping tool is gmap-pedometer.com. same concept as the usatf site, but with an added bonus: altitude information! i've created a library of my runs on my website and refer to it often. love it.

  5. Hey there,

A little while back I blogged about this post on ThisNext.com (check it out at http://blog.thisnext.com/blog/mapbuildernet.html). ThisNext recently started a month-long private beta and I'd love to invite you to come to the site and make a list of your favorite fitness and health products (and any other products you love).

Clicking this link will get you into your account: http://www.thisnext.com/invitation/3378-8584-3995. It’s a one-time URL that’s only for you, so it can’t be shared.

Once you sign up, you can get started on making a list of your favorite products and telling everybody why you love them – just like Hans Rey has done here: http://www.thisnext.com/list/B3415DD3/How-I-Gear-Up. After your list is made, you can see what other likeminded members are recommending for you. It’s a perfect way to great product recommendations from a community of people whose interests, tastes, and values are in sync with your own.

ThisNext will also help you attract more traffic, since your list will link to your blog.

One small favor: We’re asking the bloggers that we invite to please NOT post about the project until our public launch in August. We’ll let you know when.

Hope to see you around the ThisNext neighborhood. Please let us know how the site’s working for you - we’re still working on it!

    Thanks,
    Liz

P.S. Don’t hesitate to email me any questions! (lizbarker77@gmail.com)
