Self-Sensing Cups...The Future of Hydration and Calorie Tracking?

The latest entry in the quantified self industry goes beyond your basic health tracking, and begins to understand the things you are eating and drinking. Take a look at Vessyl, a cup that can sense what is inside of it, including calories, protein, fat, sugar, sodium, caffeine and more. How handy would this be for endurance events like ultrarunning? Well, maybe not in it's current incarnation, but still.

Well okay, it's $199 for a cup ($99 if you pre-order now), so maybe not for everyone. But I can't help but nerd out on where this kind of technology could be in 3-5 years. Just to keep me off the 2x caffeine gels all night in a 100-miler would pay for itself. ;-)

Interesting fact - according to the National Health and Nutrition Education Survey, beverages are the number one source of calories for most adults. Here I thought it was just us athletes!

  2. If you can't keep track of what you eat or drink throughout the day, then maybe a pen & notebook could help?

Not a dig at you Scott, just a broad dig at the world's need to connect to everything via the latest gimmick.

Maybe I just feel old at 41 having just had a hip replacement & told my running days are over.

    Great blog by the way.
